A large part of the Australian skilled force comprise of migrants from third world countries. Australian Immigration officials are tightening control on persons who seek residency status as students enrolling in low cost courses and diploma and finding jobs in Australia.
On the other hand the nation is encouraging skilled migrants who can augment the work force and help to tide over the acute work force shortage.
Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Australian Immigration and Citizenship confirmed this and said that the SOL or the Skilled Occupation list is being revised to include many new trades.
The Senator said that the Australian Government want to separate the genuine from, the opportunists.
Senator Evans was at pains to explain that the Australian Immigration is more driven by needs rather than supply.
An independent group Skills Australia was roped in to prepare a new list of vocational skills which includes 181 occupations based on the present and future occupational work force requirements. The senator further clarified that the need for an overhaul of the rules and regulation was long overdue and the Government wants to restore credibility to the Australian Immigration program.
The Government of Prime Minister Rudd is emphasizing on Quality rather quantity. It wants to attract highly skilled migrants so that the aims and the needs of the Australian Economy is fulfilled. The new changes in the Australian Immigration program is a complete overhaul of the immigration policy and preempts the possibility of people who gain entry by manipulating the migration process. People who fulfill all the requirements on the SOL will be eligible and no rebates will be given in any case. The Senator also indicated a hardening in the immigration policy and said that the Australian Immigration program cannot be determined by the courses studied by international students. The SOL hammers home the fact that Australia will choose the migrants who will contribute on a major way to the Australian Economy.
Having said that Senator Evans was quick to point that the Australian Government does not trivialize the contribution of international education sector who have provided the best levels of education to Australian and international students. Such institutions will continue to prosper and every help will be provided to students who desire to avail such education.
In a nutshell the Australian Government has ensured that students who have skills to contribute to the Australian economy can apply for Australian Immigration but Australia will not be a dumping ground for low skilled workers like cooks or hairdressers who applied by the lax and ambiguous rules set by the previous Government of Mr Howard. Under the earlier government of Mr Howard persons who completed low level vocational training like hairdressing and cooking could still apply for a permanent Australian Immigration and in all possibility were successful too. In the year 2007-08 out of 41000 general skilled visas 5000 went for cooks and hairdressers. In the latest SOL these two vocations has been removed. The New SOL is to come in effect from 1st July 2010.
