The Australian Immigration phenomenon has peaked this decade and the Australian government has decided to put the brakes on such immigration.

Australia has become the education hub with a lot of students opting to study in Australia. The last few years has seen a steep increase in international students who are studying in Australia for various courses offered by different institutions.

The reason cited  is that the immigrants who are applying for a Australian Immigration are mostly unskilled or low skilled workers who are immigrating into Australia under the guise of obtaining a degree and later on the basis of this degree apply for a permanent work visa in Australia. A majority of the students enrolled in Australian institutions are from the hospitality industry.

It is exactly this trend which the  Australian Immigration officials want to reverse this trend.

The focus is to encourage highly skilled immigrants. The discovery of the smallest continent very late in the 19th century has ensured that the country is sparsely populated. As Australia was discovered very late by the Western world and the Aborigines preferred their traditional ways the country was dependent on the migrants for completing the labor intensive jobs. Therefore the government had a very easy Australian Immigration rules earlier. Most of the migration has been from the UK. Fearing that there will be a shortage in the work force it advocated a high migration policy.  The main fear of the Australian Government was labor shortages will have inflationary effects. There was always an acute shortage of labor and it was fulfilled with immigration from the third world countries who came to Australia looking for a better standard of life. Later due to lax rules immigrants came in thousands making use of the lacunae which states that if the person has obtained some vocational degree he can seek work permit and immigrate to Australia.

By 2008 a need was felt to revise the vocational degrees which would help to regulate the quality of the Australian Immigration . It culminated into a new law which finally put the brakes on the immigration of low skilled persons. This new law will have a very big impact on the type of persons who will be allowed to immigrate to Australia. The new law aims to completely re-haul the educational institutions to produce academics who will contribute to the Australian Economy. The change in laws will not affect the number of immigration which continues to be the highest in any country. The change will surely affect the skills of the immigrants and the highly skilled immigrants will find themselves welcome as compared with unskilled or low skilled workers. A list of vocational skills were introduced which qualified for obtaining a residential permit. These included skills in the Health, IT, Engineering, Accountancy, with a score of 7 in the international English. Students who have completed one year of their curriculum in Accountancy or IT will also be eligible. The country does not want its backyard to be converted into a dumping ground of unskilled workers. The most significant change has been to focus on recruitment of skilled labor by employer and government sponsorships.
